What is R-Stamp Repair?

The “R-Stamp” is a certification issued by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors. It allows a company to legally perform repairs and alterations on pressure-retaining items such as boilers, pressure vessels, and piping systems. To earn and maintain this certification, a company must adhere to a strict set of standards for quality control, safety, documentation, and personnel training.

R-Stamp repairs are performed using qualified welding procedures, require pre- and post-repair inspections, and must be thoroughly documented for compliance with national codes like NBIC and ASME. Every aspect of the repair — from materials to the final inspection — must follow a tightly controlled process.

The Risk of Non-Certified Repair

On the surface, a non-certified repair might seem like a more affordable or faster option. But those savings are often short-lived. Non-certified contractors are not required to follow ASME codes, document procedures, or use certified welders. The work might “look” complete, but it may not be code-compliant or pass future inspections.

This opens the door to a number of problems, including:
